Flowing, rake-drawn sand art…

a walking meditation experience for contemplative reflection

& celebration of the mythic wonder of the North Oregon Coast.

Ephemeral and swept away with the rising tide, sand art reflects a spirit of interconnection with and conservation of our coastal ecology.

Walking Labyrinths is an ancient contemplative art that humans across world cultures have practiced. Often found near shorelines, folks would walk the labyrinth before going to sea.

Drawing & Walking Sand Labyrinth - ‘tween Eclipses ‘22

… tracing the sand labyrinth that I drew with my garden rake at low tide on Manzanita beach, I walk the circle, sunwise and back. I practice ‘gathering & letting go’. I recall when my son was little and we took a field trip to spend the day watching the visiting Tibetan monks as they finished their Meditation art, creating a colorful sand mandala. It was gorgeous, intricate, bright! Then, they carefully brushed up all the sand, we proceeded down to the River and they let the sand go back to the waters. I remember that day, how that experience has held me up over the years, helped me to remember resilience. All I can do is breathe around that bittersweet promise, ‘this too shall pass’. In the Yoga Sutra 1.12, it is ‘Abhyasa & Vairagya’, practice & letting go.

Mint - May Day ‘22

… it’s that centerpoint of spring, when the forest is greening up and the pink lilies are blooming on Neahkahnie Mountain. In my garden the mint is coming on and the peas are popping up! Imagine… the lovely green, the friendly aroma, the bright taste of fresh mint tea. I like it brewed in soy milk, with fragrant honey- nourishing & yum! It’s a returning that I mark with gratitude.
